THE CATHEDRAL. The Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María de la Sede is the largest Gothic temple in the world. The construction began in 1434 under the master architect Carlín. The rectangular building, completed in 1507, has doors on all sides, and is subdivided into five naves and two aisles lined with side chapels. The building underwent major reforms until 1633, of which the Sala Capitular (Chapterhouse) (1558-1592), built by the architect Hernán Ruíz Jiménez, is the most impressive. The external insulation and restoration works, which began in 1756, were completed in 1928.
