Between 1481 and 1785, the San Jorge castle was the headquarters of the Holy Spanish Inquisition and an icon of the institution in Europe. There were three common factors of the Inquisition: trials, abuse of power and victims. San Jorge is a place of contemplation. The centre explains how the Inquisition worked and helps visitors to learn about the San Jorge castle itself, both of which go hand in hand. But it also tries to give a contemporary feel to timeless concepts such as repression, fanaticism and intolerance. In short, it aims to use historical facts to explain the inspirations and preoccupations of contemporary society.
